The Boxing World is Buzzing!
Wake up call - Joshua vs Ngannou
On October 28, 2023, Francis Ngannou, former dominant UFC champion, impressed the combat sports world by holding his own against WBC world champion Tyson Fury in his professional boxing debut, despite losing by split decision.
However, in his second professional bout against Anthony Joshua in Saudi Arabia last Friday, Ngannou suffered a violent knockout in the first round after taking a devastating right hand from Joshua. Though visibly shaken, the referee did not stop the fight, allowing Joshua to land another powerful blow in the second round, sending Ngannou to the canvas, unconscious. Despite his popularity and potential, Ngannou could not replicate his remarkable performance against the man known as AJ.
With this victory, Joshua reaffirms his position in the heavyweight division and announces his intention to face the winner of the Fury vs. Oleksander Usyk fight for the unified title.
As for Ngannou, he has already planned his return to the UFC, where he is set to fight Renan Ferreira in 2024. This bout marks a turning point for both fighters, with Joshua continuing to climb to the top of boxing's premier division, and Ngannou looking to regain his form in the UFC cage.
Cinco de Mayo 100% Mexican
Mexican champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez will attempt another defense of his super middleweight titles against fellow countryman Jaime Munguia on May 5 in Las Vegas.
Alvarez, 33, boasts an impressive record of 60 wins, including 39 by knockout, 2 draws, and 2 losses. He is the dominant figure in his category and in the boxing world. Having unified the WBC, WBA, WBO, and IBF belts by defeating Caleb Plant in November 2021, Alvarez has since successfully defended his titles three times.
His next challenge is against Munguia, another undefeated Mexican boxer, 27, who has a record of 43 wins, including 34 by knockout. The bout, confirmed by sports streaming platform DAZN, is already generating great interest in the boxing world, as it pits Alvarez's dominance against a young and talented contender.
Legend vs. YouTuber
Netflix is entering the boxing world with a highly publicized event featuring Jake Paul versus Mike Tyson at the Cowboys Stadium in Dallas on July 20.
Paul, who gained fame on YouTube, has challenged Tyson, who is 30 years his senior. The card, broadcast on Netflix, will be in partnership with Jake Paul's promotion company.
Iron Mike, after showing he was still in incredible physical shape during an exhibition match in 2020, is now an entrepreneur in the cannabis industry and has often expressed interest in a fight against one of the Paul brothers. The event promises to capture attention, offering a unique blend of celebrity, sport, and entertainment.
