This Saturday in South Korea, Montreal’s Jessica Camara (13-4, 3 KOs) faced South Korean Hyun Mi Choi (21-1-1, 5 KOs) for the WBA Gold lightweight championship. Choi, a former WBA super featherweight champion, had never been defeated before. Camara had previously suffered a controversial loss in her last world championship opportunity against Kali Reis.
In the first three rounds, the fight was quite close as both boxers tried to gauge the distance and analyze their opponent. From the fourth round onwards, Camara began to gain the upper hand in exchanges with a solid right hand that frequently found its mark. She was also very effective in counter-attacks with her left hook following head movements.
The second half of the fight was very favorable for the Montrealer. She increased the pressure and volume of punches thrown. The South Korean absorbed a lot of punches due to her faulty defense. As a result, Camara won the fight by judges' decision in a spectacular performance.
As the WBA Gold lightweight champion, it will be interesting to see what comes next for Jessica. In this category, there is, of course, Katie Taylor, the WBA and WBC champion, who may not hold her titles for much longer given that she is the undisputed super lightweight champion.
The WBO champion is Britain's Rhiannon Dixon, and the IBF title will be contested today between Beatriz Ferreira and Yanina Lescano. The IBO champion in the category, Caroline Dubois, should also be considered. In summary, several opportunities should open up in the category for the Montrealer, now the WBA Gold champion.
