Abril “La Tina” Vidal has filed an official protest with the World Boxing Council (WBC) following her controversial loss to Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse. Accompanied by her team, Vidal criticized Quebec judges, promoter Camille Estephan of Eye of the Tiger Management, and the Régie des alcools, des courses et des jeux du Québec.
They questioned the composition of the jury, made up of three judges of the same nationality as Lepage-Joanisse, and the quality of the Rival gloves used during the fight. Despite the presence of a WBC supervisor, no irregularities were reported during the event at the Montreal Casino. The decision of the fight, in favor of Lepage-Joanisse, was rendered with scores of 97-93, 94-96 and 97-93 by two of the three Quebec judges.
If the WBC agrees to re-examine the fight, a panel of 50 judges would have to decide by a two-thirds majority in favor of Vidal to order a rematch. Although the initial result could stand, Lepage-Joanisse would be forced to defend her title against Vidal.
