Germain against a former world challenger
By Vincent Morin
Montreal super-lightweight Mathieu Germain will bear the brunt of the final of the next Yvon Michel Group (GYM) gala, scheduled for March 14 at the Cabaret du Casino de Montréal. For the occasion, he will face the former world contender for the WBA super-lightweight title, the Mexican Jesus Antonio Rubio.
On July 21, 2021, in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, Rubio (14-8-2, 8 KO) made the limit of 12 rounds against interim WBA world champion Alberto Puello (22-0, 10 KO).
To get this chance, Rubio had previously defeated the American Sonny Fredrickson (21-6, 14 KO).
As for Germain (23-2-1, 9 KO), he will try to continue his winning streak of five fights. Current IBF Inter-Continental champion at welterweight (140 lbs), he is ranked #9 at the IBF.
In the evening's semi-final, Canadian Olympian Caroline Veyre (6-0, 0 KO) will face an experienced rival, Argentina's Agustina Marisa Belen Rojas (8-6, 0 KO), in a clash of eight bouts at women's featherweight (126 lbs).
Belen Rojas notably made the limit with the former WBC lightweight world champion Delphine Persoon as well as the Somali-British Olympian Ramla Ali.
Middleweight Derek Pomerleau (6-0, 4 KO) will want to maintain his immaculate record against Mexican Mariel Agundez Bustamante (9-2-1, 8 KO). The latter made the limit of 10 rounds in the IBF youth world championship during his last outing, on June 22 in Paris, against Frenchman Bakary Samake.
Repentigny slugger Kevin Menoche (7-1, 5 KO) will return to the arena after his first career defeat. For the occasion, he will be opposed to the tough Mexican Bryam Galvez (5-3-2, 2 KO). A veteran of the Canadian rings, Galvez has notably made the limit with Wilfred Seyi and John Michael Bianco.
After two face-to-face matches on Ontario soil, Montreal super-lightweight Theo Owusu (2-0, 1 KO) will make his debut in La Belle Province. He will fight against the Mexican Jose Antonio Munoz Guadarrama (2-1, 1 KO).
As a curtain raiser, Moroccan amateur champion Ayoub Maanni will make his professional debut against Mexican Jesus Fernandez (2-0, 1 KO).
