The recent controversial draw between Ryan Rozicki (20-1-1, 19 KOs) and Yamil Peralta (17-1-1, 9 KOs) for the WBC Interim Cruiserweight Championship has shaken up the division. In the aftermath, the WBC announced its plans for the 200-pound division, redefining its landscape.
Norair Mikaeljan (27-2, 12 KOs) will be named "Champion in Recess," while Badou Jack (28-3-3, 17 KOs) will be reinstated as the official champion. The organization also ordered the following two bouts:
- Badou Jack must defend his title against mandatory challenger Ryan Rozicki.
- Yamil Peralta will face Michal Cieslak (27-2, 21 KOs) for the interim championship.
Jean Pascal in the Picture
With these recent developments and the possibility of a unification fight during the Riyadh Season between IBF Champion Jai Opetaia (26-0, 20 KOs) and WBA/WBO Champion Gilberto Ramirez (47-1, 30 KOs), where does Jean Pascal fit into the picture?
According to Yan Pellerin, president of New Era Promotions and promoter of Jean Pascal’s return on September 21, the opportunities look promising for the Quebec boxer:
"We have spoken with Rozicki’s camp, and they have confirmed their intention to offer their first title defense to Jean Pascal, in Montreal or Quebec City, should Rozicki win."
In the event of a victory by Badou Jack, Pellerin remains confident about Pascal's chances:
"We have also spoken with Badou Jack's team. He wants to avenge his 2019 loss to Jean, feeling he was robbed by the judges. A rematch for the world championship could therefore take place in Quebec between April and June."
These scenarios suggest a strong likelihood of Jean Pascal returning to a world championship fight in 2025.
New Era Promotions Takes It to the Next Level
Since its creation in 2022, New Era Promotions has organized six events, and 2025 could mark a major turning point for the group founded by Yan Pellerin. Discussions are reportedly underway for a broadcast deal with DAZN, which would provide significant visibility and opportunities for this young promotional group.
