Inside the Matchmaker’s Eye: Germain vs. Smith
By Vincent Morin
Ranked 13th in the world by the IBF in his weight class, Montreal’s Mathieu Germain (26-2-1, 11 KOs) had been waiting for a lucrative call. A promoter’s dream—respectable record, high world ranking, and a low knockout ratio—he was bound to get the kind of offer that meant business, and it was only a matter of time.
The Stephan Larouche-trained fighter finally got what he was waiting for. Germain will take on undefeated Dalton Smith (17-0, 13 KOs) on April 19th in Sheffield, England, Smith’s hometown, in a WBC world title eliminator in the super lightweight division (140 lbs).
A Matchmaker’s Breakdown:
This is a fascinating clash of styles—a greyhound versus a hare. The puncher (76.47% KO ratio) versus the technician (42.31%). The young gun in his prime (28 years old, 17 fights, 99 rounds) against the seasoned vet (35 years old, 29 fights, 208 rounds).
Smith, a standout on the international amateur scene with multiple appearances at the Youth European and World Championships and four outings in the World Series of Boxing, turned pro in 2019. Since then, he’s mostly fought at home in the UK, where 15 of his 17 bouts have taken place, each opponent representing a gradual step up.
His last three wins were especially notable. He stopped international British amateur star Sam Maxwell in the seventh round to capture the British and Commonwealth titles, then knocked out Freddie Roach protégé Jose Zepeda in five. Most recently, he dispatched European Union champion Walid Ouizza in just three minutes. Smith continues to improve with each outing, and he punches with serious authority.
Currently holding the WBC Silver title, Smith is ranked No. 1 by the WBC, No. 10 by the IBF, and No. 13 by the WBO.
A world title eliminator paired with a solid payday in the second-richest boxing market on the planet (after the Middle East)? It was an offer the Québécois simply couldn’t pass up.
The Road Warrior from Montreal
A pro since 2015, “G Time” Germain is as experienced as they come, having gone the 10-round distance in eight of his fights.
He’s been stopped twice—once in 2019 by heavy-handed Mexican Uriel Perez and again in 2020 by Montreal’s explosive Yves Ulysse Jr.
But since those setbacks, Germain has been on a roll, winning eight straight and capturing the IBF Inter-Continental belt along the way with a solid win over Ontario’s Steven Wilcox, a victory that catapulted him into the IBF top 15.
His biggest career win came in 2021 against Alberta’s Steve Claggett in a rematch of their 2019 draw. This time, Germain left no doubt.
Not known for his punching power, Germain makes his mark with ring IQ. He’s a tactician, a trap-setter, a fighter who frustrates and outsmarts his opponents. Most of his stoppage wins have come by attrition, outclassing foes with his superior skillset.
Smith the Favorite
A quick look at the betting lines makes it clear: Dalton Smith is the heavy favorite. He’s younger, higher ranked, undefeated, a harder puncher—and he’ll be fighting at home.
Québécois fighters haven’t had much success on British soil historically… but that’s a topic for another time.
For now, it’ll be up to G Time to prove the oddsmakers wrong—and show them what time it really is.
